Originally conceived as an app that would unify various chat apps into a single interface, Beeper focused on discovering innovative technologies that would enable the reverse engineering of the iMessage protocol. The result was Beeper Mini, a dedicated app that aims to bring iMessage functionality to Android users for a subscription fee of $1.99 per month. The app quickly gained popularity, reaching the top 20 of the Play Store charts and receiving over 100,000 downloads in the first 48 hours. Phone number registration still doesn’t work, so users need to sign in with their Apple ID. The team is actively working to resolve this limitation. Beeper Mini is available for free for a limited time to alleviate any confusion you may experience and thank you for your patience. The blog post states that once the situation stabilizes, the team will re-evaluate the possibility of restoring memberships. Despite the fact that the app did not receive an independent security audit before launch, Beeper is now asking Apple to test its security claims. The startup has indicated that it is willing to share its entire Beeper Mini code base with a mutually agreed-upon third-party security research firm to test its security and privacy requirements. This challenge reflects Beeper’s commitment to transparency and user trust.

As the new version has not yet been pushed to the Play Store, users can currently download the updated version of Beeper Mini from the website. Beeper encourages users to download updates to their devices, acknowledging that they are riskier than downloading from the Play Store, but points out that app updates are posted to Google Play at 1:28 PM ET. The updated version of Beeper Mini requires users to sign in with their Apple ID and brings new features such as chat that opens from the last unread message and an improved video player. However, since the update, users have reported a known bug related to “2FA submission error”, which can be resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Apple issued a press statement but did not directly contact Beeper. The situation remains unclear as to Apple’s possible response and if, how and when it will try to disable the updated version of Beeper.
